Text

Everybody tells me what a remarkable memory I have. As I keep writing “my story,” I struggle to remember all the details of a particular event. Where and when did it take place? What were the circumstances that led to the event? Who was involved? How was it resolved? Almost like the answers to the questions that any reporter must ask.

But my life is no newspaper story. It is my life. Over the years, I have tried to shine a light on every aspect of my life. Sometimes I have documents I can refer to, but most of the time I have to rely on my memory. And as I get older, my memory gets poorer. For certain parts of my life, I am drawing a blank.

Years ago, I had the feeling that I put out of my mind really unhappy events. They may have been so unhappy, I can’t remember what they were. Did they involve my mother, my childhood and growing up years, my shyness, awkwardness, ineptness, mistakes that I made. As a young adult, being a poor dancer, a poor dresser, a poor student, a poor athlete, just being poor. As an adult, dating, falling in love, marriage, a home and children, going out, friends and family. My work as an organizer, at the Jewish Labor Committee and everything that followed. My marriages, my children, my involvement in the community. I have tried to put everything down, but there are big chunks of my life which I have not addressed, some because I really don’t remember, others which I have chosen not to write about.
