ANOTHER VERSION OF OUR TRIP TO PITTSBURGH
Yesterday I described the trip to Pittsburgh “for public consumption,” putting the best gloss on it. I left out all the negatives, the problems, annoyances and irritations. Well, here they are:
All trips start with my obsessing about arrangements—the dates, the flight, the hotel, the places to see, and this one was no exception. It took several back and forths with David until we agreed that we would visit July 29 to August 2. Then searching for the best flights and the best prices. Of course, if we had started the process earlier, we would have gotten a better deal. Now, we had to take what was available, and it was at a much higher fare. I decided to use Hotwire for the hotel. David kept saying that the location doesn’t matter. I selected downtown, and drew the Omni William Penn. Fine.
The week before we left, I called “the ride” to arrange our transportation to the airport. I tell them when we have to be there, they call the night before to tell us when they will pick us up. For a 9:55am flight, they said they would pick us up at 6:07 am. Crazy. Since I don’t bother with alarm clocks, I told myself to get up around 5 am, and I did. The evening of July 28, I was packed; Fran had not started. We watched the last evening of the Democratic Convention, I went to bed, and as she has done in the past, Fran spent the entire night packing, filling her suitcase to overflowing, and carrying another bag. We were downstairs by 6:10 am, “the ride” came within 5 minutes with another passenger, and we were at the airport by 7 am. We can relax. We have three hours before the plane departs.
