BOSTON WORKMEN’S CIRCLE BOOK GROUP

It is hard to believe. Seven years ago, I was reading “Michael Chabon’s “The Yiddish Policeman’s Union” and I learned that the Boston Workmen’s Circle Book Group was reading it that month as well. I had never belonged to a book group, but decided to give it a shot. One of the best decisions I have ever made.

I found a wonderful bunch of the nicest, smartest, and most well-read people. They have been at it for more than 15 years, and I never knew. I have been a Workmen’s Circle member since 1956, largely because of my commitment to social and economic justice and Yiddishkeit. Now I have another reason to belong: the Book Group. We have such a sensible arrangement: alternating Jewish themed fiction and non-fiction books, usually recommended by one of the members who had read it. And starting off with bagels, cream cheese, coffee and maybe a little fruit salad is a nice touch. Try it. You may like it.
