Lewis can paint and draw.
He has done that before.
And he has a lot of prints
Waiting to be sold.

Nina’s an educator.
Doesn’t ride the elevator.
She always takes the stairs
Because it’s healthier.

Then, came, one great day when
Nina took the Metro Red Line.
Lewis got on, feeling just fine.

The blood in Lewis’ veins were flowing.
It was love.

Lewis and Nina fell in love.

Outside IN all kinds of weather.
Strolling THROUGH a field of heather.
Oh such happy days.

Happy days forever more
Lew said, “NINA, je t’adore.”
There is much more joy in store.
They have found the way!

In March, off to Spain they went.
T’was a week seemed heaven-sent.
Time together was well spent.
For this, they were wed.

Marrying again today.
Everyone here says hooray.

              <text>THE POEM
To the Happy Couple: Yay Hooray

I come today as father of the groom
To give my blessing to the happy pair.
Today there is no room for doom or gloom.
May only joy and rapture fill the air.

MAY good fortune smile upon you both.
May your LOVE endure throughout the years.
May YOUR investments and your plants show growth.
May you ONLY drink the finest of craft beers.

The first of June—a very special day.
We all feel blessed to share this day with you.
A special day for both in every way.
An early birthday present for our Lew.

How pleased I am that you chose June to wed.
February? Where CAN I find a rhyme?
Still, in February you both used your head
And got CERTIFICATION just in time.

February’s fine for City Hall.
Wait. I just found a rhyme for February.
It really wasn’t difficult at all:
“You like apple pie, and I like cherry.”
Hard to find a rhyme? Really? Not very.

In March you went to Spain and saw Bilbao.
You visited Burgos and Barcelona.
You laughed and said, “our honeymoon starts now.”
You e-mailed us, you couldn’t use the phona.

A brief biography of the bride and groom:
She, born in California, he, New York.
She has always liked a lot of room.
He has never liked a lot of talk.

He went to Wilson, she to Whitman High.
He to RISD, she to UC Santa Cruz.
I think I said they both like apple pie.
Should also say they both like jazz and blues.

She has three sons and has three grandkids too.
She loves them all, and they love one another.
She has a sister Nan, and he has sisters two.
There’s Carol, Martha, and David, his brother.

His nephews: Eliott, Henry and Miles.
Coincidentally, my grandkids too.
A fact that brings to all of us wide smiles:
We all are now Mishpukhe. Yes, it’s true.

They both have traveled far, and they returned,
And found each other. Oh, it was “bashert.”
Fate has a way of stepping in, we learned.
And by some greater force it was declared.

The teacher and the artist become one.
How wonderful the paths they took have crossed.
Today upon them shines a radiant sun.
Instead of rice, wrapped candy may be tossed.

She taught for 20 years at Sidwell Friends.
3.14159’s her Pi.
Glass jewelry and higher math she blends.
Nina’ll succeed at anything she’ll try.

The Nation’s Gallery is where Lew works.
His etchings, prints and murals are just great.
Immersed in art is one of his job’s perks.
But Lewis hasn’t taught Tai Chi of late.

“Art Handler” is a title, not a name.
It pays the bills and let’s Lew work with art.
Some day his work may bring to Lewis fame.
Junior high was where he got his start.

Lewis explained the Russian way to say
Nina’s name: pronounce it Koltanov.
And with a nod he told me, by the way,
Saying it like that, it rhymes with love.

And at the touch of love, wise Plato said,
Everyone, a poet does become.
Rejoice today as loving poets wed.
Followed by piano, bass and drum.

Mazel Tov! a life of joy and laughter.
And may you share your love forever after.

              <text>HAPPY 18TH ANNIVERSARY!

Joel and Nancy,
You’re pretty fancy.
Married for 18 whole years.
We loved your wedding.
Fantastic setting.
Six times we give you three cheers.
(six times three equals 18, get it?)

We remember it well
It still rings a bell.
The setting was gorgeous and grand.
Your folks were so proud;
Your friends were so loud.
Not nearly as loud as the band.
(Hey, it got us to Disneyland.)

Now living in Concord,
Working for Genzime
Who could ask for anything more?
A cool neighborhood;
A floor made of wood.
And Logan, sprawled on the floor.
(So some rhymes are forced; sue me.)

Logan is growing
Everyone’s knowing
That Logan is one special guy.
He is a reader.
Also a leader.
There’s nothing that he wouldn’t try.
(Has he tried writing poetry?)

Nancy and Joel
Life’s not a bowl
Of cherries or oatmeal or soup.
Life is for living.
Helping and giving.
To those who are out of the loop.
(Another way of saying poor people.)

You both look fantastic
Don’t do anything drastic.
Everything will be OK.
Whatever they do,
We’ll all muddle through.
It’s your Anniversary Day.
(We are getting to the end.)

It’s been a pleasure.
So much to treasure.
Michigan, Toronto, now here.
“L’chaim! To Life”
For husband and wife.
’93 was a good year.
(The year you were married.)

AGAIN, HAPPY ANNIVERSARY!

              <text>HOW IT USED TO BE
AND HOW IT IS

I used to run most everywhere.
Now I can hardly climb a stair.

I took the stairs two at a time.
Now no handrail, I can’t climb.

I’d stroll in sunshine and in rain.
Now I have to use a cane.

If I fell down, I’d jump right up.
Now falls result in one bad klup.

I gave no thought if something dropped.
Now I can’t bend down to pick it up.

Distant whispers I could hear.
Now I can’t hear when someone’s near.

The day went by, I never peed.
Now I always feel the need.

Signs far away in streets I saw.
Now I can’t read them anymore.

Everything is now too heavy.
Up on the dock; down on the levee.

I’ve accumulated lots of stuff.
Locating it, is now too tough.

I loved the “all you can eat” buffet.
After two bites, take it away.

The nights of making love have passed.
I’m clinging to a flaccid mast.

Reaching up or bending down.
I look just like an aging clown.

Remembering. It was my strength.
My memory now is all but spent.

I never went to matinees.
Now no evening theatre. Only days.

The balcony was where we’d sit.
For so-so plays, or for a hit.

These days the senior center’s where
We take the bus that takes us there.

Brown wavy hair was what I had.
My hair’s turned gray, and I am sad.

There’s never enough light these days.
I change my seat six different ways.

Forgetfulness, my middle name.
What the hell. It’s all the same.

I once fixed things, now I break them.
I once gave help, now I take them.

Technology? Don’t look to me.
Somewhere I have lost the key.

How things work today, I do not know.
Though most machines give off a glow.

I’d read and I would know the plot.
What I read yesterday, I forgot.

When I met someone, I shook hands.
My hands shake now. Is it my glands?

I fall asleep watching TV.
Is it the show, or is it me?

At museums I’d spend a day,
Now a few hours is all I stay.

Happy Birthday to my son.
You da one.

Today you’re turning 58.
That’s just great.

On Friday you fly to Milan.
That’s the plan.

Your chance to talk It-al-i-an.
You da man.

Nina and you will have a ball.
Write or call.

There’s a special sight to see:
Da Vinci.

The Last Supper’s getting old
And getting cold.

Pasta with veal parmiagian
Hey, right on.

Lots of cities from Cremona
To Verona.

It must take a lot of years
To float some piers.

Today’s another Super Tuesday.
Hil’s good news day.

We’ll see what Bernie has to say.
Since it’s her day.

Remember: “Fur Gezinterheyt!”
It will be great.

Lots of hugs and lots of kisses
To the Missus.

              <text>H A P P Y B I R T H D A Y
D A V I D

Happy Birthday to my son.
33 years since you’ve begun.
Or
32 years since you were one.

You’ve done a lot in 33,
To find out what you want to be.
Or
What else do you want to see?

In 33 years you’ve travelled far
Across the land to find your star.
Or
NY, Ann Arbor, in your car.

You even travelled to DC.
Now you’re back, and at HC.
Or
You said, “DC’s not the place for me.”

Studying and teaching too.
That’s what Jews are supposed to do.
Or
We do much, though we are few.

When you were born, our baby boy.
You filled our hearts with pride and joy.
Or
Fran and I said “Ut Azoy.”

We kvelled at everything you did.
I told the world, hey, that’s my kid.
Or
Under a sheet, you sometimes hid.

Today I say to everyone.
I’m David’s dad; he is my son.
Or
My son, he is a lot of fun.

At six you sat at a computer.
No one could have been much cuter.
Or
At seven, you’re a Red Sox rooter.

You conquered the old Oregon Trail.
By horse and wagon, not by rail.
Or
Letters to Oregon now go by mail.

You conquered Schechter, Brookline High.
You didn’t even have to try.
Or
Europe and Israel also flew by.

Columbia gave to you New York.
Where you could bike or you could walk.
Or
Where people talk, and talk, and talk

An historian in Michigan.
But then there came a change of plan.
Or
But you remained a Red Sox fan.

Study for the Rabbinate.
Son, I think that’s simply great.
Or
And check around and find a mate.

It’s great to have you near to us.
Though Friday nights, we make a fuss.
Or
You can take the T or bus.

We’ll catch a Red Sox game or two.
And watch the Bruins win a few.
Or
The Celtics have a team that’s new.

Your birthday’s on election day.
Who will win, it’s hard to say.
Or
Will it help if we all pray?

Martha Coakley, Charlie Baker?
I really hope that he won’t take her.
Or
To me, Scott Brown is still a faker.

The rich continue to get richer.
It is not a pretty pitcher.
Or
Janet Yellen. I won’t ditch her.

It doesn’t look good for our side
Karl Rove’s taking us for a ride.
Or
Harry Reid will go and hide.

Why don’t people like Barak?
He thinks too much. He’s not a rock.
Or
Because he’s black. They’re still in shock.

We’re going to the dogs, they say.
With you, it’s just the other way.
Or
I think Artie’s here to stay.

Artie is a new addition
Which may start a new tradition.
Or
Life right now is in transition.

I will end as I began:
Best wishes from your biggest fan.

Whatever you set out to do.
You’ll do it well, and see it through.

Your birthday is a special day.
Enjoy it all in every way.

Amazing how quickly the time has flown by.
Maybe not for you, but certainly for me.

Just 32 years ago, you entered our lives.
Talk about transformative.
Not just for me, but for all three.

Then
Me: Proudly proclaiming, “That’s David, my son.”
Excited. Delighted. Also Perplexed.
You: Saying little. Cute. Cooperative. Creative. Clever.

Now
You: gentle, genuine. generous, genial, Jewish.
Artistic, analytic, loyal, logical, left-leaning, left-handed.

Wise, witty, welcoming, well-spoken, wistful.
Political, with a sense of history, and a sense of humor.

Me: growing older, slowing down, more forgetful.
But also more excited, more delighted, less perplexed.
Proudly proclaiming, “My son, the Rabbinical student.”

Impressed and amazed by your career choice.
Overjoyed having you “Back in Boston.”

Looking forward to your accomplishments, and
To the fulfillment of your dream.

Confident that you will play your part
In making this a shenere un besere velt.
And continue to advocate for Yiddish and justice.

My wish for you on your birthday:

A happy, healthy, and fulfilling life.

To find joy in learning and teaching.

To find love and your bashert.

<text>A BIRTHDAY POEM FOR MY GRANDSON
(12-11-10)

Happy Birthday, Grandson Henry.
It is clear for all to see.

You are one terrific guy.
From earth below, up to the sky.

You are smart, and you are good,
And you do the things you should.

You eat and read and watch TV,
And see the shows you want to see.

You help your mother and your dad.
You’re always happy, never sad.

You go to school and write and draw.
At home, you write and draw some more.

You walk and run and climb and hike,
And sing and dance and swim and bike.

I’ll bet you do arithmetic.
For you, addition is no trick.

Subtracting—known as “take away,”
It isn’t work. For you, it’s play.

You play games and know karate,
Here’s to a great birthday party.

It’s your sixth birthday that we cheer.
Now you’ve grown another year.

To make sure the day’s complete,
Have a birthday cake to eat.

With six candles on the cake.
Make sure you have a wish to make.

When you blow the candles out,
And everybody gives a shout:

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, HENRY DEAR,
TO YOUR WONDERFUL NEW YEAR!</text>

              <text>HAPPY BIRTHDAY ALAN

Happy birthday, Alan dear
On this, your nine-and-fiftieth year.

According to a little bird
It’s on November 23rd.

59 is really fine.
A toast to you with a vintage wine.

59 is a great year.
I toast you with imported beer.

Vodka with a twist of lime.
Whatever beverage: L’chaim!

59—you’re still a youth.
And I am telling you the truth.

If 40 is when life begins,
You’re just 19—and my head spins.

Happy birthday son-in-law.
Good you don’t live near the shore.

West Orange is a lovely town.
Keep living on the higher ground.

You have a lovely wife and kid.
I’m glad you made the choice you did.

A good husband, a good dad.
They are also very glad.

A good lawyer, a good ball player.
So on your birthday, a small prayer:

Much happiness and good health.
Lots of love, sufficient wealth.

Continue being good and kind.
Your job should never be a grind.

Good friends, good works and good cheer.
May this be a splendid year.</text>
